As we discussed last month, the pain from migraines is as real as the pain from an injury with a difference—healthy choices
and non-medical remedies can sometimes stop migraines before they start. Rather than using medication as your go-to treatment, you may be able to alleviate
the pain of a migraine, plus prevent future migraines, with chiropractic treatment and achieve your goal of chiropractic wellness!

As a reminder, a few of the measures effective in handling migraines are:
- Calm environment
- Temperature Therapy
- Massage
- Drink caffeinated beverages
- Sleep well
We continue discussing four other lifestyle choices that can help reduce migraine pain and prevent future migraines.
- Eat wisely.
- Be consistent. Eat at about the same time every day.
- Don't skip meals. Breakfast is especially important.
- Avoid foods that trigger migraines. If you suspect that a certain food (such as aged cheese, chocolate, caffeine or alcohol) is triggering your migraines, eliminate that food from your diet and make a note of the difference, if any.
- Exercise regularly. This helps your body release certain chemicals that block pain signals to your brain. These chemicals also help alleviate anxiety and depression, which can make migraines worse. Choose an activity you enjoy, such as walking, swimming, or cycling. But start slowly. Exercising too vigorously can trigger migraines.
- Manage stress. Stress and migraines often go hand in hand. You may not be able to alleviate daily stress, but you can keep it
under control.
- Simplify. Rather than squeezing more activities into a day, leave some things out.
- Manage your time wisely. Update your to-do list every day, both at work and at home. Delegate, and divide large projects into manageable chunks.
- Take a break. A few slow stretches or a quick walk may renew your energy for the task at hand.
- Adjust your attitude. Don't let yourself think, "I can't do this." Think positive instead, "This is hard, but I can do it."
- Let go. Don't worry about things you can't control.
- Relax. Deep breathing from your diaphragm can help you relax. Focus on inhaling and exhaling slowly and deeply for at least 10 minutes every day. It may also help to consciously relax your muscles, one group at a time. Then sit quietly for a minute or two.
- Keep a migraine diary. This can help determine what triggers your migraines. Note when it started, what you were doing at the time, how long it lasted, and what, if anything, provided relief. By changing patterns in your daily life, you may eventually be able to prevent migraines.
Remember: The same lifestyle choices that promote good health can also reduce the frequency and
severity of your migraines. Take control of your pain with good chiropractic care!
